Dr. Neil Fleshner graduated with a medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1988. He completed specialty training in urologic surgery and oncology from 1993 to 1996, received a Master’s in Public Health in epidemiology from Columbia University in 1997, and completed his oncology training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Fleshner is certified in both urology and epidemiology.

Dr. Fleshner is the Martin Barkin Professor and Chairman of Urology at the University of Toronto, and has been a urology fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for 23 years. Dr. Fleshner is also a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. In the past, he has served as the Head of the Division of Urology at the University Health Network, and the Head of Genitourinary Cancer Site group at the Princess Margaret Hospital. He also holds the prestigious Love Chair in prostate cancer prevention at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Aside from surgical practice, Dr. Fleshner is the lead or co-investigator on numerous studies researching urologic cancer prevention with an emphasis on prostate cancer. His current projects include two randomized trials of intervention in prostate cancer, as well as laboratory work assessing prostate cancer metabolism. Dr. Fleshner has had a prolific research career, authoring over 400 scientific papers, books and book chapters on prostate disease. Dr. Fleshner is a highly sought after speaker, having delivered many talks and poster presentations all over the world over the last 23 years.

Dr. Sender Herschorn graduated from McGill University Medical School in 1972 and completed the University of Toronto Urology training program in 1978. He completed clinical fellowships in urodynamics, incontinence, and reconstruction in 1979 at the Institute of Urology in London, UK and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Tx.

Dr. Sender Herschorn is a Professor in the Division of Urology at the University of Toronto and attending Urologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He completed an 11-year term as University Chair and holder of the Martin Barkin Chair in Urological Research. He is past-Chair of the University of Toronto Department of Surgery Academic Promotions Committee and is a past-President of the Canadian Urological Association and past-General Secretary of the International Continence Society.

Dr. Herschorn has been a senior investigator in clinical trials relating to functional urology. He has won undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education awards at the University of Toronto as well as the Zimskind Award of the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology, the W.T. Aikins award from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine for excellence in undergraduate medical teaching, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology. He has been the Director of the University of Toronto Urology Update since its inception in 1992. In 2015, he received an American Urological Association Presidential Citation Award for contributions in research for the treatment of urinary incontinence and overactive bladder.

Dr. Herschorn has produced many scientific publications, among them the chapters on Vaginal Surgery for Prolapse and Incontinence for 2 editions of Campbell’s Urology and on Injectables for Urinary Incontinence for the recent and forthcoming editions. He is an Editorial Board Member of Canadian Urological Association Journal and of Neurourology and Urodynamics. He was Chair of the Committee on Vesico-urethral Stenosis after Treatment for Prostate Cancer at the First International Consultation on Urethral Stricture Disease and Chair of the Committee on Surgery for Male Incontinence at the five International Consultations on Urinary Incontinence.

Dr. Jack Barkin was born in Toronto, Ontario. After graduating from the University of Toronto medical school in 1977, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (urology, 1982) and both the American and International Colleges of Surgeons (1984-1985). Among numerous other achievements, Dr. Barkin holds a Master’s certificate in Healthcare Management from the Schulich School. He is licensed to practice medicine in Canada, New York, and Arizona.

Currently, Dr. Barkin is a clinical professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, and holds the directorships of the Can-Am High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for Prostate Cancer, the Surgical Oncology Humber River Regional Hospital and the Male Health Centre in Toronto. Past positions include Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at the Humber River Regional Hospital and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff Group of Central LHIN of Ontario. Dr. Barkin has been a member of various societies, associations, and medical advisory boards across Canada.

Having performed the first robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in any Canadian University affiliated with a community hospital and the first HIFU in Canada, Dr. Barkin has been on the cutting edge of urologic surgery throughout his career.

Dr. Barkin has been an active participant in clinical research for the last thirty years, having played a role in over 250 Canadian and international clinical trials. He is the lead investigator on numerous studies researching treatments for interstitial cystitis (Elmiron®), erectile dysfunction (Viagra®, Levitra® and Cialis®) and prostate cancer (Lupron®, Androcur® and Zoladex®). Dr. Barkin has authored over 100 papers on different aspects of urology and has been invited to speak worldwide on numerous aspects of urologic care.

Dr. George Zhanel is a Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases in the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba; Coordinator of Antibiotic Resistance in the Departments of Medicine and Clinical Microbiology, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg; and Research Director of the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Alliance (CARA), of which he is also the Founder and Chief Editor.

Dr. James Obaji is a family physician with a large family practice in downtown Toronto. He attended Cornell University where he earned his Bachelor degree in Economics. He went on to complete his medical training at AUC School of Medicine followed by his residency at the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Obaji is affiliated with St. Joseph’s Hospital. Dr. Lorne Aaron earned his medical degree from the McGill faculty of Medicine in 1991. He then completed his residency in Urology at McGill University, obtaining his diplomas as a specialist in Urology at both the Collège des médecins du Québec and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1996.

He began practicing urology at l’Hôpital Anna-Laberge in Châteauguay in October 1996 and was chief of the Urology service from 1996 until 2001. Since then, Dr. Aaron has been working at l’Hôpital Charles LeMoyne in Greenfield Park.

Dr. Aaron has been instrumental in the development of Urology in Québec. For over ten years, he served as a member of the administrative counsel of the Québec Urology Association (QUA) and acted as President from 2008 until 2010. He also served as the Québec representative on the socio-economic committee of the Canadian Urology Association (CUA) for 6 years. He is currently on the board of directors of the CUA and is a member of the CUA Health Policy Committee and the Community Urology Committee.

As a general urologist, Dr. Aaron has shown special interest in prostate and bladder cancer. In addition to these, Dr. Aaron also has expertise in treating all disorders of the prostate including benign prostatic hypertrophy, performing vasectomies and vasectomy reversals (vasovasostomies), urinary incontinence in women, and kidney stone management

Dr. Anil Kapoor is currently Professor of Surgery (Urology) at McMaster University/ St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. He obtained his MD from Dalhousie University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology. He is certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, having obtained post-graduate training from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Renal Transplantation, Reno-Vascular surgery, and GU –Renal Oncology. He has been invited as a Visiting Professor at Queen’s University, University of Ottawa, University of British Columbia, University of Manitoba, University of Western Ontario, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Dalhousie University.

Dr. Kapoor is currently Head of the Genito-Urinary Oncology program at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Program Director of the McMaster University Urology Residency Program, and Co-Chair of the NCIC Kidney Cancer Disease Group. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, 5 book chapters and over 150 abstracts in the fields of kidney transplantation, urologic laparoscopy, and urologic oncology with a focus on kidney cancer and prostate cancer. He established the Kidney Cancer Centre of Excellence at McMaster University in 2009, and is current Head of the Clinical Trials Group at the McMaster Institute of Urology. Dr. Kapoor’s expertise brings great value to the Verity Scientific Advisory Board.
